Before the gate drops, the work begins. Race day isn’t just about speed; it's about preparation. The difference between a podium finish and a mechanical failure often comes down to what you did before the track. That’s why a full inspection is essential.
From tire pressure to throttle response, every part of your machine plays a role in performance and safety. Whether you’re racing motocross, enduro, or just getting into competitive riding, completing a thorough check ensures you're ready to ride hard and ride smart.
Use this checklist before every race to give yourself the best shot at a clean, confident run.
General Pre-Race Inspection & Service Checklist
1. Engine & Transmission
• Check and change engine oil (if not recently done)
• Check oil filter (replace if needed)
• Inspect for any leaks (oil, coolant, fuel)
• Check coolant level and condition
• Ensure radiator is clean and not clogged
• Verify proper clutch operation and feel
2. Air Intake & Filter
• Clean and oil air filter (or replace if old)
• Check airbox for dust or water
• Ensure proper sealing of air filter to prevent dirt ingestion
3. Suspension
• Check front forks and rear shock for leaks or damage
• Set sag and clickers for track conditions (adjust rebound/compression)
• Inspect linkage bearings and swingarm pivot
• Grease suspension linkages if needed
4. Tires & Wheels
• Inspect tire wear and condition
• Set correct tire pressure (based on track conditions – soft/hard terrain)
• Check for spoke tightness
• Inspect rims for cracks or dings
• Check wheel bearings for play or noise
5. Chain & Sprockets
• Clean and lube chain
• Check chain tension and alignment
• Inspect sprockets for wear (shark fin teeth = replace)
• Ensure chain guide and slider are not excessively worn
6. Brakes
• Check front and rear brake pads for wear
• Inspect rotors for warping or grooves
• Test brake feel and top off fluid if low
• Look for any leaks in brake lines or calipers
7. Controls
• Inspect and adjust clutch and brake lever freeplay
• Check throttle play and snap-back
• Make sure grips are secure and not torn
• Inspect handlebars for bends or cracks
• Ensure footpegs, shifter, and brake pedal are tight and pivot freely
8. Fasteners & Frame
• Torque check critical bolts: axle nuts, triple clamp, brake callipers, engine mounts
• Inspect subframe and frame for cracks or loose bolts
• Zip-tie loose wires/cables out of the way
9. Fuel System
• Use fresh fuel (race gas or high-octane pump gas, depending on your setup)
• Check fuel lines for cracks or leaks
• Clean carb or fuel injector if needed
10. Electronics
• Check kill switch operation
• Ensure all electrical connections are secure
• Charge battery (if electric start)
Race-Day Extras
• Bring spare levers, tubes, air filter, spark plug
• Bring tire pump, chain lube, tools, and fluids
• Mark fuel can with your name/team
• Hydrate and rest up the day before!
Even with a solid checklist, there’s no substitute for a professional once-over. Taking your bike in for a service before race day gives you peace of mind. Trained eyes can catch wear, fatigue, or damage that might otherwise go unnoticed. And don’t forget the post-race check-up. After a full day of high-rev abuse, your machine deserves attention. A quick service afterwards helps spot issues early, keeps everything running clean, and gets you ready for the next gate drop without surprises. Treat your bike right and it will return the favour on the track.
