Training Drills to Level Up Your Riding at Home

No track? No problem. Here's how to sharpen your skills in your own backyard.

You don’t need a full motocross track to get better at riding. Whether you’ve got a driveway, a field, or a patch of dirt, there are plenty of ways to work on technique, balance, and control from home.

At Revolution Powersports, we know that consistency beats terrain. Here are simple but effective training drills you can do right now with no trailer or travel required.

1. Figure 8s

What it helps: Cornering, throttle control, and body positioning.
How to do it: Set up two cones or markers and ride a tight figure 8 around them. Focus on smooth throttle input and keeping your elbows up.

2. Stop-and-Go Balance Drills

What it helps: Clutch and brake control, slow-speed balance.
How to do it: Ride slowly in a straight line, then stop and balance as long as you can without putting your foot down. Restart smoothly and repeat.

3. Body Position Practice (Static Drills)

What it helps: Muscle memory for attack position, cornering, and braking form.
How to do it: On a stand or with the engine off, practice moving between seated, standing, braking, and cornering positions. Use a mirror or record yourself to check your posture.

4. Clutch Control Drills

What it helps: Smooth launches, hill starts, and technical sections.
How to do it: Practice feathering the clutch at low speeds and start and stop using only the clutch and throttle without stalling.

5. Obstacle Navigation

What it helps: Line choice, reaction time, and bike feel.
How to do it: Set up cones, sticks, or rocks and practice weaving through them. Keep your eyes up and pick smooth lines.

Bonus: Mental Reps Matter

Visualize your riding. Watch onboard footage from pro riders. Break down your last ride and think about what you’d do differently next time. All of it helps.

Keep Sharpening the Skills

Every hour counts. The more time you spend practicing (even at home), the better you’ll be when it’s time to hit the track again.
