Essential Protective Gear for New Riders

Daisy Adamson |

New to motocross? Here’s what you actually need to stay safe.

Getting into dirt biking is exciting, but before you twist the throttle, make sure you’re protected. The right gear can make all the difference between walking away from a fall or sitting out the season.

At Revolution Powersports, we’ve helped tons of new riders gear up with confidence. Here's a breakdown of the essential protective equipment every beginner should have—no fluff, just the must-haves.

1. Helmet

Your #1 line of defence. A certified, well-fitting helmet is non-negotiable. Look for something DOT or ECE rated, and make sure it fits snug but comfortably. This means no shifting or pressure points.

Tip: Don’t buy used. You never know what impacts it’s been through.

2. Gloves

Blisters, crashes, and branches - your hands go through a lot. A good pair of motocross gloves offers grip, padding, and protection without sacrificing control.

Look for: Reinforced palms, breathable materials, and a snug wrist closure.

3. Chest Protector or Body Armour

Roost hurts, and so does hitting the ground. A chest protector shields your torso from impact, debris, and unexpected get-offs. Some styles even include shoulder and back protection for full coverage.

Optional but worth it: Lightweight under-jersey options keep you protected without bulk.

4. Knee Guards (or Braces)

Your knees take serious impact during crashes and jumps. Knee guards are a minimum; knee braces offer even more support for aggressive riders or those with prior injuries.

Pro tip: Try them with your riding pants before you commit - fit is everything.

5. Riding Boots

Regular boots don’t cut it. Motocross boots protect your feet, ankles, and shins from impacts, burns, and twisting. They also provide the structure you need for proper shifting and braking.

Invest here - cheap boots break down fast and put your safety at risk.

6. Goggles

From flying roost to dust clouds, goggles keep your vision clear and your eyes safe. Look for anti-fog lenses, tear-off systems, and a comfortable seal with your helmet.

Bonus: Swap out lenses depending on light conditions for better visibility.
